Archaeological Dig Unearths Remains of Female Servants

23 April, 2010

An archaeological dig at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science revealed remains of what is in all probability two female servants in their 20’s from the mid-1600’s, the Smithsonian has concluded, one African decent, the other European.

The skeletal remains were found during excavations five years ago of the school’s campus, which used to be Colonial port village of Gloucester Town. The Smithsonian reportedly has a draft of findings on the discovery.

Lyle Torp of the Ottery Group, the firm that conducted the dig and analyzed the artifacts, says the find is rare. According to Torp, there are only a handful of skeletal remains that are from that early of a time period.

People, Smoke Outside Already!

16 April, 2010

Eleven people were displaced and four apartments and three cars were damaged following a cigarette-induced fire at a Newport News apartment complex on Sunday.

Around 12:30 pm, firefighters received a call about the fire located on the 13000 block of Christy Lane. Arriving on scene, they were greeted with heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the apartment, according to a Newport News Fire Department release.

Aside from two residents being treated for minor injuries at the scene, nobody else was injured.

An ADT Home Security system cannot prevent fires like this one, but it certainly can minimize the damage your home receives by alerting authorities the instant it detects smoke and/or heat. ADT also offers a sprinkler system with their home security package, which can aid in containing the fire to the location it sparked.

Octopus Is His Game, Octavius Is His Name

9 April, 2010

Back in January, the National Zoo acquired a 2 ½-year-old giant Pacific octopus. Upwards of 7,000 people voted on one of four names to call this little fellah, who is currently 3 feet long but could eventually have an arm span of up to 25 feet! Yikes! That’s a lotopus, in my opinion.

The chosen name is Octavius. The other three names on the block were Olympus, Ceph, and Vancouver. Octavius came to the zoo right before the 2010 Winter Olympics, hence the name Olympus. Octopuses belong to a group of animals called cephalopods (hence the nomination of the name “Ceph”) and this one came from Vancouver (hence the name Vancouver).

You can learn more about octopuses, and other sea creatures, by watching Animal Planet, which is part of basic DISH network packages.

Virginia Woman Gives Herself High Ranking Job At The FBI

2 April, 2010

A 29-year-old Virginia woman masqueraded as an FBI agent and recruited her neighbors to be her assistants.

Brenna Reilly of Arlington was indicted by a federal grand jury in Alexandria last week, charged with impersonation of an FBI agent.

Reilly advised neighbors in her apartment complex that she was the FBI’s director of forensics. Two of her neighbors agreed to work as Reilly’s assistants and provided her with confidential personal information, such as their social security numbers, on fake job applications.

Her assistants were given tasks that included writing condolence letters to family members of agents killed in the line of duty.

According to authorities, Reilly never was an FBI agent. Her lawyer declined comment.

When you use ADT security systems, you aren’t getting an imposter. You are getting the real deal. You can never be too careful with the security of your home and family, and ADT can help keep your family safe.

Burglary Ring - Multiple Arrests Made In One Of The Biggest Regional Burglary Rings

3 March, 2010

Investigators in Amherst County, Virginia say they've put an end to one of the biggest regional burglary rings they can remember. Local law enforcement executed a planned raid last week on a suspected home in Madison Heights and found hundreds of items that have been confirmed as stolen.

The Sheriff’s office in Amherst County said this was the largest burglary ring in the last 25 years. Recovered items included a Bobcat front-end loader, a wood chipper, a home heat pump, and a cache of firearms that numbered in the hundreds.

Even though the burglars – Curtis Talbott, Jamie Floyd, and Edward Lee Justis – are off the streets in Virginia, it doesn’t mean you should let down your guard. Home security means taking steps every day to keep burglars out of your house and away from valued possessions and loved ones. An ADT monitored security system can help prevent a home burglary, and will keep you and your family safer than ever.
