An archaeological dig at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science revealed remains of what is in all probability two female servants in their 20’s from the mid-1600’s, the Smithsonian has concluded, one African decent, the other European.
The skeletal remains were found during excavations five years ago of the school’s campus, which used to be Colonial port village of Gloucester Town. The Smithsonian reportedly has a draft of findings on the discovery.
Lyle Torp of the Ottery Group, the firm that conducted the dig and analyzed the artifacts, says the find is rare. According to Torp, there are only a handful of skeletal remains that are from that early of a time period.
