Octopus Is His Game, Octavius Is His Name

9 April, 2010

Back in January, the National Zoo acquired a 2 ½-year-old giant Pacific octopus. Upwards of 7,000 people voted on one of four names to call this little fellah, who is currently 3 feet long but could eventually have an arm span of up to 25 feet! Yikes! That’s a lotopus, in my opinion.

The chosen name is Octavius. The other three names on the block were Olympus, Ceph, and Vancouver. Octavius came to the zoo right before the 2010 Winter Olympics, hence the name Olympus. Octopuses belong to a group of animals called cephalopods (hence the nomination of the name “Ceph”) and this one came from Vancouver (hence the name Vancouver).

You can learn more about octopuses, and other sea creatures, by watching Animal Planet, which is part of basic DISH network packages.
