Eleven people were displaced and four apartments and three cars were damaged following a cigarette-induced fire at a Newport News apartment complex on Sunday.
Around 12:30 pm, firefighters received a call about the fire located on the 13000 block of Christy Lane. Arriving on scene, they were greeted with heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the apartment, according to a Newport News Fire Department release.
Aside from two residents being treated for minor injuries at the scene, nobody else was injured.
An ADT Home Security system cannot prevent fires like this one, but it certainly can minimize the damage your home receives by alerting authorities the instant it detects smoke and/or heat. ADT also offers a sprinkler system with their home security package, which can aid in containing the fire to the location it sparked.
